A Story from the Inn
I’ve done many weddings over the years at the inn. The majority of them were formal in look, and I can honestly say that you can have a formal wedding without spending all of the money you have. Be creative and take time to define what it is you’re after.
Let me give you a little example of what creativity can do. Two brides who were getting married, both teachers on a budget, wanted to have a luncheon wedding to save on costs, instead of having a large Saturday-night affair. They invited sixty guests so it would be a formal, yet intimate celebration. They selected carefully from the menu and stayed away from the higher-priced items. They included a champagne cocktail toast (a requirement at my inn), and they only had the open bar for one hour, to further cut down on costs. They served wine with their luncheon and had a wonderful classical guitarist who played throughout.
Still, with all their cut corners, they realized that they did not have much left over for flowers, which can be a huge part of the expenditure if you’re not careful. They were such a wonderful couple, we all fell in love with them both the minute we met them. You just couldn’t help it. I told them not to worry about the flowers, that the inn would give this as a gift to them and that we could do some kind of simple centerpieces that would look nice.
I got up early in the morning, and with two of my staff, went out into the garden. It was June and everything was in bloom. What started out as simple table centerpieces ended up in extravagance. We couldn’t stop ourselves and the vases and flower displays were filled with hydrangea, bear grass, roses, ferns, and ivy sweeping all across the tables and gazebo.
When Tina and Gerry came in, the place was alive with color and beauty, and they both had tears in their eyes because of what my staff had done with only the blossoms growing right outside the inn.
The point is, there are creative ways to make your affair look lavish if you want to. Just find ways to make it happen through imaginative ideas. When you’re stuck and don’t have the answer, ask your support team for suggestions. In Tina and Gerry’s case, it was right under our noses. That old saying still holds true: “Where there’s a will … there’s a way!”
